Tiina Herttua is a visual artist whose work is guided by a desire to combine careful observation, material sensitivity and personal expression.
Each piece emerges from a dialogue between thought and craftsmanship.
Visual artist Tiina Herttua explores the relationship between humans, nature, and one another through expressive, large-scale paintings. In her work, paint and its visible traces are integral, tactile elements - both physically and conceptual significant. She employs bold color and a visual language that abstracts and distills the subject while preserving subtle allusions to representational forms. In addition to oil and acrylic, Herttua integrates natural pigments into her process, deepening the connection between material and theme.
In recent years, she has focused on landscape painting, engaging with the tradition not only as a motif but as a site of emotional and spatial intensity. Her paintings aim to evoke a sense of experiential sublimity—rooted in the Romantic tradition that first elevated landscape from a backdrop to a subject in its own right. Her practice is informed by art historical context and visual research, grounding her expression in both material sensitivity and conceptual depth.
Her works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Finland, across many European countries, as well as in Australia, Japan, and the United States and they have been acquired for several private and public collections.
Tiina Herttua graduated from the Lahti Institute of Fine Arts and is a member of both the Finnish Painters’ Union and the Artists' Association Muu.
"The starting point of my paintings can be an impression or a memory of a place or landscape — a particular moment in the scenery, light, or color. I gather influences that find their way into my work. I simplify and process my subjects in a suggestive and reductive manner, always leaving space for the viewer’s own interpretation.
In recent years, I have spent part of the year working in the Mediterranean, particularly in Sicily, where I mainly paint outdoors, following the traditional en plein air method favored by the Impressionists. I value the benefits of working in natural light — as well as the challenges it brings to the painting process."

2024/5 I presented a series of paintings inspired by the Kalevala at Galleria Kitano in Kyoto, Japan. The works reinterpreted stories of female figures such as Aino, Marjatta, and Ilmatar. The exhibition, titled Sagas, was a collaboration with Japanese artist Erika Kusumoto and marked our sixth joint exhibition — this time focusing on traditional stories from both Finland and Japan. The project was supported by the City of Vantaa and the Kalevala Society Foundation.
My works are available through several art lending collections as well as through the online art store Taiko. You are also warmly welcome to inquiry about available pieces directly from my studio.
